Help in Washington: choose what you need first

Food, health coverage and bills can involve different agencies. Choose the need that matters most today. This guide is for Washington state; it covers selected starting routes and does not list every local benefit or decide eligibility.

One useful next step

Open one guide below, find its official route and note your next action. You do not need a GetBenefits account. A program application still needs the agency’s own checks.

I need help buying food

Basic Food / SNAP — DSHS. Start a food-assistance application, prepare for the interview and find alternatives if a document is missing. The household and income checks belong to this program.

Prepare a Basic Food application

If food cannot wait, ask DSHS to check expedited service. It has specific conditions; do not wait for a normal decision before asking. See urgent food steps.

I need health coverage

October 2026: check the Apple Health notice affecting some noncitizen adults.

Apple Health / Medicaid — HCA. Choose a route for the person who needs care. Healthplanfinder handles many adult and family applications; Washington Connection handles Classic Medicaid and other routes. Some categories overlap.

Choose an Apple Health route

A Basic Food household count or decision does not determine medical coverage. See why the household can differ.

I need help with heating or cooling bills

LIHEAP — local providers coordinated by Washington Commerce. Use Commerce’s county map to find your provider and arrange an appointment. Ask which documents, appointment options and funding are currently available. Commerce itself does not decide household eligibility or schedule the appointment.

Find the official LIHEAP provider map

If you have a shutoff notice, tell the provider and your utility when you contact them. You can also ask your utility about its own assistance options. A referral is not a promise that a bill will be paid.

I need cash assistance or help with child care

Washington Connection also includes applications for cash assistance and child-care services, with the responsible agencies reviewing each program separately. Choose the benefit you need; its screening result does not replace an application.

I already applied or need to renew

Start with the latest notice: which agency sent it, what is due, and when? Washington Connection links to MyWABenefits for application or renewal status and interview details. For Apple Health, keep using the service that handles your coverage. Find health-coverage follow-up help.

A simple note to return to later

On paper or your own device, write program / next action / due date / contact. Keep each program’s notice separate. This site does not save a case, set reminders or receive your documents.

Before you continue

Is this a Washington government website?

No. GetBenefits is an independent, free guide. Applications and eligibility decisions stay with the responsible agencies. Official links are labeled and you do not submit documents here.

Is there one application that approves every benefit?

No. Washington Connection can handle several programs, but each program has its own decision. Many Apple Health applicants use Healthplanfinder, and LIHEAP appointments are handled by local providers.
