Our Methodology
This page explains how we source, verify, and maintain the accuracy of every piece of information on GetBenefits.tools. We believe transparency about our process is part of what makes our content trustworthy in a YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) category that matters to people's financial stability and access to essential services.
Primary data sources
All numerical values — income limits, maximum benefit amounts, deductions, tax credit values, federal poverty levels — come exclusively from official US federal and state government agencies. We do not use secondary sources for primary data claims.
| Program / data | Primary source |
|---|---|
| SNAP income limits, allotments, deductions | USDA Food and Nutrition Service |
| SNAP state-specific portals and policies | USDA FNS State Directory |
| Medicaid eligibility, expansion status | Medicaid.gov |
| Federal Poverty Guidelines | HHS ASPE |
| EITC, CTC, tax brackets | Internal Revenue Service |
| WIC eligibility and benefits | USDA WIC |
| Section 8 / Housing Choice Vouchers | HUD HCV |
| LIHEAP allocations and rules | ACF / HHS |
| State minimum wages | US Department of Labor |
Verification schedule
Federal benefits values change on predictable schedules. We update our centralized data file at fixed times each year:
- January 15–31: Tax brackets, EITC amounts, Child Tax Credit, HHS Federal Poverty Guidelines, IRA contribution limits, ACA Marketplace premiums.
- July 1–15: State minimum wages (those that adjust on July 1).
- October 1–15: SNAP COLA (income limits, maximum allotments, standard deductions), FPL projections, certain Medicare adjustments.
- Continuous monitoring: Major regulatory changes (such as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act in July 2025) trigger an immediate review of all affected pages, regardless of schedule.
Each page displays a verification banner showing the date of last verification and the source. If you see information that appears to be outdated, please report it.
Quality controls
Before any numerical change is published:
- The value is verified against the primary source (linked above).
- The value is cross-checked against at least one established secondary source (CBPP, KFF, NerdWallet, etc.) to confirm we have interpreted the official source correctly.
- For complex calculations (such as SNAP benefit amounts), our calculator output is cross-checked against the example calculations published in the official agency methodology documents.
- The update is logged in our internal change log with date, source, and reason.
What our content is — and isn't
Our content is:
- Educational. It explains how programs work, who typically qualifies, and how to apply.
- An estimate. Our calculators implement official formulas and give realistic estimates of what you may qualify for.
- A navigation aid. Every page links you directly to the relevant government agency where you can apply and get a definitive eligibility determination.
Our content is not:
- An eligibility determination. Only your state or federal benefits agency can determine whether you qualify.
- Legal, tax, or financial advice. For personalized advice, consult a qualified professional.
- A government website. We are an independent third-party resource. We are not affiliated with any government agency.
Corrections policy
If you find an error on our site:
- Please contact us with the page URL, the error, and ideally a link to the correct official source.
- We aim to respond within five business days.
- If verified, we will update the page immediately, log the correction in our change history, and note the change at the bottom of the affected page.
Our use of AI tools
We use AI assistants as research aids for tasks like organizing information, drafting initial copy, and cross-checking calculation logic. We do not publish AI-generated content without human review. Every claim about benefits eligibility, every numerical value, and every recommendation goes through human verification against official sources before publication.
This approach is consistent with Google's guidance on AI-generated content, which prioritizes the quality and accuracy of content over the method of production.
