WIC in 2026: Nutrition Help for Moms and Young Children
WIC helps pregnant women, new mothers, babies, and children under 5 eat well. It provides benefits for specific healthy foods, plus support with breastfeeding and nutrition. A local WIC clinic checks the requirements for each person applying.
WIC provides specific healthy foods and nutrition support to pregnant women, new moms, and kids under 5. SNAP, Medicaid or TANF participation can establish the income part of WIC eligibility. It does not replace the category, residency and nutrition assessment.
What WIC is
WIC stands for Women, Infants, and Children. It gives you a card or checks to buy specific healthy foods — things like milk, eggs, fruits and vegetables, whole grains, baby formula, and baby food. It also offers free breastfeeding support, nutrition advice, and referrals to other help like healthcare and SNAP.
Who qualifies for WIC
WIC checks these four requirements for each applicant:
- Category. Pregnant; within six months after a pregnancy ends; breastfeeding up to the baby’s first birthday; or an infant or child younger than five. A caregiver can apply for a child.
- Residency. Apply through the WIC agency serving where you live.
- Income. The agency reviews income or an accepted SNAP, Medicaid or TANF participation route. Meeting this requirement alone is not WIC approval.
- Nutrition assessment. A qualified health professional checks for nutritional risk at no cost. Do not assume this requirement is automatic.

Start with the person who needs WIC
A family can have several applicants. Review each person instead of using another person’s age or result.
| Applicant | What I prepare | What still needs checking |
|---|---|---|
| Pregnancy | Tell the clinic how many babies you expect. The agency confirms household size for the income review. | Residency, income and nutrition still need review; you can contact WIC before birth. |
| Within six months after a pregnancy ends | Note when the pregnancy ended and who is applying. | The clinic confirms the period that applies to the adult applicant. |
| Breastfeeding, up to the baby’s first birthday | Describe how the baby is fed and any recent change. | Assessment and the food package depend on the circumstances; breastfeeding alone is not approval. |
| Infant or child under five | Note the child’s date of birth and who will attend as caregiver. | The child is assessed separately. An adult’s category ending does not by itself decide the child’s case. |

If the child is already five or no WIC category applies, you can review other food help without treating this guide as a decision about those programs: SNAP and school meals.
Prepare your WIC contact
- Why this may help. Someone falls within one of the listed categories and needs food or nutrition support.
- What still needs checking. The clinic must check category, residency, an income route and nutritional risk for that person. A SNAP, Medicaid or TANF notice can establish income eligibility; it does not complete the assessment.
- What I prepare. Note who is applying and ask which identity, address, income or benefit records the clinic accepts. If something is missing, contact the clinic anyway and ask what alternative it can accept.
- Where I continue. Use the official WIC route to find the agency. In Washington, you can also start with our state guide.

| WIC household size | 185% of poverty / mo | 185% of poverty / yr |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | $2,461 | $29,526 |
| 2 | $3,337 | $40,034 |
| 3 | $4,212 | $50,542 |
| 4 | $5,088 | $61,050 |

💡 Tip
If you are pregnant, tell WIC how many babies you are expecting. WIC can count each expected baby when determining household size for income eligibility. The clinic confirms the household count.
How to apply for WIC
- Contact the WIC agency where you live. Use the official WIC application guide to find your state or local office. A pre-screening result is not an application or approval.
- Ask what the appointment requires. Confirm whether it is in person or remote, which applicants must attend, and which identity, residence and income or benefit documents are needed. Ask for help if a document is unavailable.
- Complete the nutrition assessment. Staff review the applicant's nutrition and health information and any measurements or tests needed. Ask about language or accessibility support when booking.
- If approved, learn to use the benefit. Review your food package, approved shops, benefit dates and next appointment. Ask the clinic about substitutions or feeding needs; the package differs by participant.

Common questions
Can fathers, grandparents, or foster parents apply?
Yes. Any parent or caregiver of a child under 5 can apply for that child, including fathers, grandparents, and foster parents.
Can I get WIC and SNAP at the same time?
Yes. SNAP can establish the income requirement for WIC. The applicant must still meet the WIC category, residency and nutritional-risk requirements, and the clinic makes the decision.
Does WIC affect immigration status?
What foods can I buy with WIC?
WIC covers specific healthy foods chosen for nutrition: milk, eggs, cheese, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, beans, baby formula, and baby food. Your benefit lists exactly what you can get.
