CalFresh (SNAP) in California: income references and how to apply

CalFresh (SNAP) helps eligible households in California buy groceries. Find the official application, understand the income references, and know what to do after you submit. The agency decides eligibility and the benefit amount.

Start with one step

Applying for SNAP is free. Open BenefitsCal to use the official application route. You can gather remaining proof while the agency reviews your request.

Estimate a regular full month of CalFresh

This optional calculator covers a limited set of California households of 1–8 people, with no member age 60 or over or in SNAP’s disability category. Its reviewed period is September 8–30, 2026. The county decides eligibility and the actual amount; the first month is not calculated.

If the calculator does not load, you can still prepare the information, read the dated income references, or continue with BenefitsCal. You do not need an estimate to apply.

Who belongs in the CalFresh household?

CalFresh usually groups people who live together and buy and prepare food together. Spouses living together and children under 22 living with a parent must generally be included together, even when they buy food separately. Tell the county about the relationships; do not count every roommate automatically.

What the SNAP office checks

California calls SNAP CalFresh. Its published gross-income guideline for most households is 200% of the poverty guideline, not 130%. The county also reviews the CalFresh household, countable net income and other rules. Households with an older or disabled member can have different income treatment; do not decide you are ineligible from one number alone.

Full-month example for California, FY2026: an otherwise eligible three-person household with $1,000 in agency-calculated net income would have $785 − (30% × $1,000) = $485 for that month. Net income means income after allowed SNAP deductions, not take-home pay. This example does not determine eligibility or the prorated first month.

Keep income and costs separate

Report wages and other income separately from rent, utilities and care costs. The 20% earned-income deduction applies to income from work, not every income source. Ask about allowed medical costs if a household member is 60 or older or meets SNAP disability rules. The office calculates which deductions apply; not every bill is deducted in full.

Income references and maximum benefits

These published CalFresh gross-income guidelines and maximum allotments apply October 1, 2025–September 30, 2026. They cover most households; passing a gross-income guideline does not guarantee a benefit. The county reviews household-specific net income and other eligibility rules.

Changes that may affect a 2026 case

California changed utility treatment in November 2025, some immigration eligibility in April 2026 and work requirements in June 2026. Ask the county which rules and exceptions apply to your case. A household income table does not check these conditions.

Prepare for the interview

Start with the county’s request. Common records include income, rent or mortgage, utility costs, dependent care and eligible medical expenses. Keep the interview even if something is missing; ask the county for help obtaining acceptable proof.

You may start a CalFresh application with your name, address and signature. This starts the process; it does not complete the interview or prove eligibility. Ask for an interpreter or help completing the form if needed.

How to apply in California

Apply for CalFresh through BenefitsCal or your county social services office. The California Department of Social Services (CDSS) provides statewide guidance, but your county handles the application and your case.

  1. File the application. Follow the official submission instructions, including the signature. Do not delay filing just to collect every document. Keep the confirmation or a copy and the date submitted.
  2. Follow up on the interview. Read the interview or follow-up instructions sent for your case. Complete any required interview and contact the office promptly if you miss it or need help arranging it.
  3. Send requested proof. Use the deadline on the agency notice. Income and housing records are common examples. If you cannot get a document, ask the office what alternative it accepts.
  4. Check the decision. The normal SNAP processing standard is 30 days from filing. Ask the agency to screen you for expedited service: qualifying urgent cases use a 3-day standard in California. The screen considers income, available money and housing costs; low income alone is not an approval. If the deadline passes without a decision, contact the office with your filing date. Keep any denial notice and follow its review or hearing instructions.

A useful detail for California

For missing documents, a missed interview or a question about your decision, contact the county handling your case. CDSS does not process individual applications or keep those case files. Ask the county to screen you for expedited CalFresh when you apply; California's qualifying expedited cases use a three-day standard.

When is CalFresh added to the EBT card?

For regular monthly CalFresh, CDSS links the deposit day to the last digit of your county case number. If you are unsure which number or date applies, ask the county handling your case.

For your first payment, follow the county’s approval instructions. A recurring schedule does not confirm that an application is approved or that a payment has arrived. If you are waiting for a decision, check the application steps. If an expected payment is missing, ask your county.
