Food help for children, students and families: choose your next step

Check school meals, WIC, holiday food and student SNAP routes, or find food needed today.

Practical options and next steps

Food help uses several different programs. Start with the person who needs food and when they need it. A school meal decision, WIC appointment and SNAP application are separate processes.

Start with this

Choose one need below: school meals, WIC, vacation meals, college food or food today.

Who this helps

Parents, caregivers, pregnant or postpartum applicants, college students and anyone waiting for food assistance.

Where this guidance applies

This is a United States guide. Schools, WIC agencies, state SNAP offices and local food services confirm requirements and availability. External sources are mainly in English; ask the service for language help.

What to prepare

Steps to take

  1. Match the person and time Use food-today contacts for an immediate gap; use the school, WIC clinic or SNAP office for ongoing support.
  2. Check before filling another form Ask whether the person is already approved, whether a transfer is needed or whether a separate program requires its own application.
  3. Confirm practical access Ask about opening hours, location, pickup rules, required proof and the next contact date before travelling.

Check meal status for every child

Ask the school nutrition office to confirm each child’s status for the current school year.

What to prepare

  • Each child’s name and school, plus any approval or direct-certification letter.

Steps to take

  1. Ask whether breakfast and lunch are covered, when the status starts and what the child would pay. Verify every name on the notice.
  2. If a child changed schools or is missing from the letter, ask the receiving district about transferring or confirming eligibility.

What to check before relying on this: A sibling’s approval or last year’s letter does not by itself confirm every child’s current record. A transfer may need follow-up.

If that route does not work: If a child needs food before the record is fixed, tell the nutrition office today and ask what meal arrangement is available.

Apply for school meals without duplicate forms

Ask whether your school needs a household application or already provides meals through direct certification or a schoolwide arrangement.

What to prepare

  • The current school form; household income details or an eligible program case number when requested.

Steps to take

  1. Use one household application for children in the same district. For different districts, ask each what it needs before assuming a form transfers.
  2. Follow the correct form section, sign and submit through the school’s channel. Keep a copy and confirm the decision.

What to check before relying on this: Use the program case number requested, not the EBT card number. A schoolwide income survey may serve another purpose; ask before skipping it.

If that route does not work: Request a paper form or language help. You may apply during the school year if circumstances change.

Contact WIC for pregnancy or a young child

Find the WIC agency serving where the applicant lives and request an appointment or application instructions.

What to prepare

  • Applicant’s age or pregnancy/postpartum dates; ask which identity, address and income or benefit records the clinic accepts.

Steps to take

  1. Tell the clinic who is applying. A caregiver can arrange help for a child under five; ask which applicants must attend.
  2. Confirm appointment format, the nutrition assessment and what to do if a document is missing. If approved, check food-package and benefit dates.

What to check before relying on this: Pregnancy, specified postpartum or breastfeeding periods, and childhood under five are different categories. Income alone does not complete WIC eligibility.

If that route does not work: If WIC is not the right category or an appointment is delayed, ask about SNAP, school meals or local food services.

Find children’s meals during school vacations

Ask the district nutrition office which summer meal sites or other vacation-food services are operating near you.

What to prepare

  • Children’s ages, ZIP code and the dates you need food; note whether you can travel to a site.

Steps to take

  1. Use the official summer-meals route linked by USAGov, then confirm the site’s current opening days, meal times and pickup or on-site rules.
  2. Ask separately about SUN Bucks, the summer grocery benefit, and your state’s participation, application and benefit-use dates.

What to check before relying on this: A summer site may be closed during a winter or spring break. SUN Meals and SUN Bucks are different programs; neither listing nor prior participation confirms this year’s access.

If that route does not work: If no vacation site is open, ask 211 or a local food pantry about food for the household today.

Check college food help and student SNAP rules

Contact the campus basic-needs or student-support office and ask for food help plus assistance with the state SNAP process.

What to prepare

  • Enrollment level, meal-plan terms and work or work-study records; ask the school for missing proof.

Steps to take

  1. Ask the state whether the special SNAP student rules apply to your course and whether you meet an exemption as well as the other eligibility rules.
  2. Explain how many meals the college plan supplies and whether you are already included in another household’s SNAP case.

What to check before relying on this: Half-time-or-more enrollment in qualifying higher education generally requires a student exemption. Receiving most meals through a meal plan can prevent SNAP eligibility; FAFSA alone is not approval.

If that route does not work: Use a campus pantry or community food service while the state checks your application.

Find food today while an application is pending

Call 211 or use USAGov’s emergency-food contacts to find a nearby pantry or meal service.

What to prepare

  • Your location, household size and transport needs; ask what identification, if any, the particular service needs.

Steps to take

  1. Before travelling, confirm it is open today, has food available and serves your area. Ask about an appointment, pickup or a prepared meal.
  2. The National Hunger Hotline is 1-866-348-6479 in English or 1-877-842-6273 in Spanish, Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–8 p.m. Eastern.

What to check before relying on this: A referral is not a reservation or a promise of supplies. Ask whether foods need refrigeration or cooking if you lack either.

If that route does not work: If the first location cannot help, request one open alternative and ask the SNAP office about expedited review for your situation.

Choose one task

This is your own follow-up date, not an official deadline. Check any deadline in the agency's notice. The calendar file creates an all-day event; choose notification settings in your calendar.

Follow up

  • Keep the confirmed pickup time or appointment and the contact’s reply together; check again if plans change.
  • For ongoing benefits, save the decision and next renewal or appointment date. Receiving one form of help does not automatically enroll you in another.

Common questions

Can I ask for food before every document is ready?

Yes. Contact the relevant service and ask what it requires and what alternatives it accepts. Requirements differ between a pantry, school meals, WIC and SNAP.

Are vacation meals and summer grocery benefits the same?

No. SUN Meals offers meals through participating sites; SUN Bucks provides eligible households a grocery benefit where the program operates. Confirm the local dates and process separately.
