Your steps
Choose your application route
Check whether you live in New York City. The state guide links myBenefits; NYC residents use ACCESS HRA through the city SNAP page.
Prepare the next action
For a paper application, follow the state guide and send it to your local social services department. NYC also lists in-person and mail routes.
Get help and follow up
Follow your SNAP interview instructions. If you live in NYC, use the interview link on the HRA SNAP page.
Keep proof and a way to follow up
If you submit an application or documents, keep the receipt or confirmation the agency provides. Check that it received the correct material; a saved draft may not have been submitted.
Read the decision and the next instructions
Look for the result, any missing information and the date for the action requested. If you disagree, use the review or appeal instructions on your notice. Do not assume that asking for help extends a deadline.
After you apply
Keep the confirmation and read each notice. Check whether the agency needs documents, an interview or another action. A submitted application is not an approval.
If you get stuck
“I am trying to apply for this program. Which route applies to my situation, what information is missing and what is my next action?”
If something gets in the way
I cannot use the website
Ask the agency about another application or contact method. Use the official instructions and avoid giving documents to an unverified intermediary.
I do not have a requested document
Ask what evidence the agency can accept and how to provide it. Read the due date in the actual request; do not choose a deadline from a general guide.
I need language or accessibility help
Describe the language or accommodation you need before the interview or appointment. Ask how the agency provides that help.
I have not received a response
Check the official account or contact the responsible office with the confirmation available. Ask whether the application was received and what is still needed.
I received a denial or closure notice
Read the reason and the review or appeal instructions. Keep the notice and seek qualified help if needed; sending a new application may not replace the response requested.
After you apply: keep the process moving
Check receipt
Confirm that the agency received what you meant to submit.
Keep contact details current
Use the agency’s official method to report changes in your contact details.
Answer document requests
Read what is needed, how to send it and the date stated in the request.
Check for an interview or appointment
If one is requested, confirm the time, format and any language or accessibility support.
Read the written decision
Check what was decided, the effective dates and how to question the decision.
Keep renewal instructions
Read the next renewal or review notice and act on its actual instructions.

SNAP in New York: Apply and Follow Up (2026)
New York Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, local social services districts and NYC HRA handle SNAP food assistance in New York. Start with the official application route, then use this guide to prepare for the interview and follow-up. Only the agency can decide eligibility and the benefit amount.
New York’s application guidance is the official next step. If you need help applying, use the agency contacts below. If food cannot wait, ask the agency about expedited SNAP and check the immediate-food options further down.
Choose the New York City or county route
New York City residents apply and manage their SNAP case through ACCESS HRA. Elsewhere in New York, use myBenefits or your local Department of Social Services. New York also publishes different income guidelines for households with earnings, older or disabled members, or dependent-care expenses; the federal reference below is not the only pathway.
What the agency checks in New York
The SNAP office in New York checks your household, income, allowed deductions, and other program rules. The federal gross-income reference is 130% of the poverty guideline, but it is not a universal state eligibility cutoff. Broad-based categorical eligibility (BBCE) and rules for households with an older or disabled member can change which tests apply. Being above a reference number does not by itself mean you cannot qualify.
Example for an otherwise eligible three-person household in New York, for a full month in FY 2026: if the agency calculates $1,000 in monthly net income after allowable deductions, the illustration is $785 − 30% of $1,000 = $485 for that full month. This explains the calculation; it is not a personal estimate or an approval.
Prepare your income and costs separately
Bring wages, other income, rent and eligible care or medical expenses. SNAP allows a 20% deduction from earned income; it is not a 20% discount on every source of income. The agency calculates the deductions that apply to you. Ask which income test and state options it is using.
Income checks and the FY 2026 federal reference
The table shows the federal 130% gross-income reference and maximum allotment for the 48 contiguous states and D.C. for FY 2026: October 1, 2025–September 30, 2026. A state may apply a different gross-income pathway. These are not benefit promises or the January–December 2026 poverty guidelines.
| Household size | Federal gross reference (130%) / mo | Federal maximum allotment / mo |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | $1,696 | $298 |
| 2 | $2,292 | $546 |
| 3 | $2,888 | $785 |
| 4 | $3,483 | $994 |

How to apply for SNAP in New York
New York Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, local social services districts and NYC HRA are the responsible agencies. Use the official route below; a saved draft, screening result or submission receipt is not an eligibility decision.
- Choose a way to apply. For New York City, open the HRA SNAP page and follow its ACCESS HRA link. For other counties, apply through myBenefits from the state application page, or use the paper application and local social services directions. New York’s application guidance.
- File, then keep the confirmation. Ask the agency how to file an initial signed SNAP application if you do not yet have every document. Write down the submission date and any case number.
- Complete the interview and follow-up. Follow the interview instructions for the agency handling your case. NYC HRA accepts a signed application with a readable name and an address if you have one; do not wait to own every document before asking how to file.
- Prepare the proof requested for your case. Common examples include identity, income, rent or mortgage and utilities. Tell the agency about dependent-care costs and eligible medical expenses for an older or disabled household member. Ask for help if a document is unavailable; follow the deadline on your notice.
- Ask about the decision and urgent needs. The ordinary federal SNAP processing standard is 30 days from filing. Households that meet expedited-service rules are entitled to faster service, generally within seven days. Ask the agency to screen your income, available money and housing costs and to explain any delay. These are processing standards, not a promise that every application will be approved.
Use the official application route
GetBenefits is free to use. Open the state-linked service or ask the agency for application assistance. GetBenefits does not submit your application, collect application documents or make an eligibility decision.
