Who this guide is for

People seeking Health First Colorado (Medicaid) in Colorado, or helping someone apply, follow up or find the right office.

Have these ready if available

  • The name of the program and the state where you are applying.
  • Any notice or document request you have received, including its date.
  • The information and evidence requested by the agency for your situation. Ask what alternatives it accepts if something is missing.
  • A safe way for the agency to contact you. Do not enter personal or case details on GetBenefits.

Your steps

The text file includes all steps, your check marks, questions and official sources. Use Print to save a PDF if your device offers that option.

  1. Start here

Start a medical-assistance application in PEAK from the Health First Colorado page.

  2. Choose another route if needed

If you need another route, the state lists phone, paper and county-office applications.

  3. Complete the next action

Check the application status in PEAK; ask your county or application-assistance site for help.

  4. Keep proof and a way to follow up

If you submit an application or documents, keep the receipt or confirmation the agency provides. Check that it received the correct material; a saved draft may not have been submitted.

  5. Read the decision and the next instructions

Look for the result, any missing information and the date for the action requested. If you disagree, use the review or appeal instructions on your notice. Do not assume that asking for help extends a deadline.

After you apply

Keep the confirmation and read each notice. Check whether the agency needs documents, an interview or another action. A submitted application is not an approval.

If you get stuck

“I am trying to apply for this program. Which route applies to my situation, what information is missing and what is my next action?”

If something gets in the way

I cannot use the website

Ask the agency about another application or contact method. Use the official instructions and avoid giving documents to an unverified intermediary.

I do not have a requested document

Ask what evidence the agency can accept and how to provide it. Read the due date in the actual request; do not choose a deadline from a general guide.

I need language or accessibility help

Describe the language or accommodation you need before the interview or appointment. Ask how the agency provides that help.

I have not received a response

Check the official account or contact the responsible office with the confirmation available. Ask whether the application was received and what is still needed.

I received a denial or closure notice

Read the reason and the review or appeal instructions. Keep the notice and seek qualified help if needed; sending a new application may not replace the response requested.

After you apply: keep the process moving

Check receipt

Confirm that the agency received what you meant to submit.

Keep contact details current

Use the agency’s official method to report changes in your contact details.

Answer document requests

Read what is needed, how to send it and the date stated in the request.

Check for an interview or appointment

If one is requested, confirm the time, format and any language or accessibility support.

Read the written decision

Check what was decided, the effective dates and how to question the decision.

Keep renewal instructions

Read the next renewal or review notice and act on its actual instructions.

Medicaid in Colorado: 2026 Eligibility and How to Apply

Colorado has adopted Medicaid expansion. The adult expansion route has income, age, Medicare-related and other requirements; the agency checks which category fits. Children, pregnancy, disability, and older age have separate coverage routes. Start with the category that fits the person applying.

In plain words

An income figure is a starting point, not approval. Ask the agency to check the right category for each person. A parent and a child in the same home can have different coverage results.

Ask about both Health First Colorado and CHP+

Health First Colorado is Colorado’s Medicaid program. Children and pregnant people who do not qualify for it may have another option through Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+). The adult reference table below is not the CHP+ income test. One application can screen for the two programs.

State sources: Health First Colorado: apply online, by phone or in person · CHP+ children and pregnancy categories · One application screens family Medicaid and CHP+ · Checked September 8, 2026.

Who qualifies for Medicaid in Colorado

Ask the agency to consider every relevant route:

  • Adults ages 19–64: the expansion group, subject to income, Medicare status, residency, and other eligibility rules.
  • Children: Medicaid or CHIP, with age-specific income rules.
  • Pregnancy: a separate category, with its own income and coverage rules.
  • Older adults, people with disabilities, and people who need long-term care: separate rules may consider assets as well as income.

2026 Medicaid income limits in Colorado

The table is an arithmetic reference for the common adult expansion income level, using 2026 HHS poverty guidelines. It is not an official Colorado eligibility table. The agency decides whose income counts, the applicable category, the effective date, and any rounding or exclusions.

2026 reference only — 138% of HHS poverty guidelines, rounded to the nearest dollar
Household size for the applicable categoryApproximate monthly referenceApproximate annual reference
1$1,835$22,025
2$2,489$29,863
3$3,142$37,702

Calculation: annual HHS guideline × 1.38; monthly reference = that unrounded annual value ÷ 12. Alaska and Hawaii use their own HHS guidelines. This is not a take-home-pay test or a reason to stop an application near a boundary.

Common questions

Did Colorado expand Medicaid?

Yes. Colorado adopted adult Medicaid expansion. Income is one requirement; age, Medicare status, residency, and the applicable category still matter.

What is the Medicaid income limit in Colorado for 2026?

There is no single limit for everyone. The 138% poverty figures on this page are rounded reference calculations for the common adult expansion income level, not a state eligibility determination. Children, pregnancy, disability, and long-term care have separate rules.

Could a child qualify when an adult does not?

Yes, the result can differ. Ask for a child coverage review, including CHP+, rather than applying the adult income reference to the child.

Eligibility guidance reviewed September 8, 2026. Sources and reference periods are shown above. Confirm current category rules with the agency before applying.

Common questions

Does this guide decide if I qualify?

No. The state agency evaluates the applicable program rules and your circumstances. Ask the agency to explain the route and documents for your case.

What if I cannot use the online route?

Open the official information or local office link and ask which phone, paper or in-person option is available for this program. Do not assume all programs use the same portal.

Is the linked service available in these four languages?

Our guide is translated. The external site, forms and interpretation options may differ. Tell the agency which spoken and written language you need.
